Princess Charlotte was born on the morning of 2nd May 2015 at St Mary’s hospital in Paddington. She weighed 8lbs 3oz, slightly lighter than her elder brother George at 8lbs 6oz. Likewise to George’s birth, Charlotte’s followed the same announcement ritual with the easel laid out in front of Buckingham Palace and an official statement from the royal house.

Her birth was declared with great excitement from the public and much debate took place over her choice of name which was announced on 4th May. Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. Charlotte was one of the bookies top choices. Previously the royal name of the heir to the British throne in 1796, and the name of George III’s consort, it was already a very popular girls name in Britain. It is also the middle name of the Duchess of Cambridge’s sister, Pippa so that may have influenced their choice. Elizabeth as a middle name is clearly a direct link to Queen as well as the Duchesses middle name and her mother, Carol Middleton’s middle name. The choice of Diana was very poignant for Prince William’s late mother Diana Spencer, and many members of the public had placed bets on it being chosen for her first name.

Since her birth Charlotte has made several public appearances with her family, her first most notable was on the royal tour of Canada in 2016. She delighted the crowds in Victoria with her delight over the balloons during a family event at the Government House. She was next publically seen at her Aunt Pippa’s wedding in May 2017 where she was a bridesmaid. The following month she accompanied her family on a royal tour of Germany and Poland, and famously has a tantrum on the tarmac next to the royal plane.
